Spiritualism is an American-born religion that believes we can communicate with spirits of the dead. I became aware of Spiritualism as a teenager, after my cousin received a message from a medium who revealed startling details about my grandfather's death that proved to be true. Since then, I have been deeply curious about how a total stranger could have learned one of my family’s secrets. In 2001, I began photographing at the place where my grandfather’s message was received: Lily Dale, New York, home to the world’s largest Spiritualist community. I expected to spend one summer making pictures there. Instead, I spent the next 17-years photographing mediums, researching Spiritualism, and traveling to séance rooms in the United Kingdom and Europe in search of ‘ectoplasm’ – the elusive substance that is said to be both spiritual and material.
