Séance @ Stories LA, photo by Alexandra Fanning.

I am a photographer and writer based in St. Paul, Minnesota. My work explores photography’s relationship to invisible or contested realities, moving between documentary reportage, archival research, and experimental image-making.

My book Séance, named one of TIME Magazine’s Best Photobooks of 2019, has been widely featured and exhibited.

Earlier in my career, I contributed photographs to print publications including Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, Discover, TIME, The Wall Street Journal, and Reader’s Digest.

I have spoken at venues including Harvard, Yale, Edinburgh School of Art, University of Brighton, Science Museum London, Peabody Essex Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Walker Art Center.

Since 2014, I have curated and hosted an annual summer symposium in Lily Dale, NY. I also publish monthly field reports on Substack—part documentary, part ghost story.

My book in progress, SORRAT, draws from the recently recovered archive of the Society for Research on Rapport and Telekinesis. It tells the story of one of the longest-running paranormal experiments in American history.
